Discovery has agreed a distribution deal to make its Eurosport Player over-the-top (OTT) service available via Amazon’s range of streaming products.
Subscribers to the pan-European broadcaster’s platform, who pay between €39.99 (US$44.15) and €69.99 (US$77.20) annually, will now be able to access it on Amazon Fire TV, Fire tablets and Echo Show devices.
The tie-up also sees Amazon’s Fire TV service become one of Eurosport Player’s preferred streaming media players in Europe, while Amazon and Eurosport are working together to offer the OTT service with the purchase of some Fire TV devices in certain territories.
In addition, Amazon will be purchasing Eurosport Player annual subscription passes to offer to selected customers when they buy Fire TV devices, and Amazon’s virtual assistant Alexa will be integrated with the service to enhance engagement with viewers.
Paul Rehrig, the general manager of Eurosport Digital, said of the deal: “Amazon shares our focus on product innovation and providing the best possible experience for our customers. They have proven global leadership in personalised customer experiences and extensive, engaged audiences in each country. Together, we’re committed to our shared goal of upgrading the Eurosport Player app for Fire TV and supporting 4K UHD streaming, giving fans unforgettable sports content experiences.
“This is the first of many enhancements we are making to Eurosport’s digital services ahead of Tokyo 2020 as we continue to develop our award-winning direct-to-consumer products for fans who want a fuller and more immersive viewing experience.”
Eric Saarnio, European head of Amazon Devices, added: “We are always looking for new ways to bring great content to our customers and by working with Eurosport to bring the Eurosport Player to Amazon Fire TV and Echo Show devices we’re making it possible for customers to watch their favourite sports content in 4K Ultra HD quality. We are thrilled to be working with Eurosport.”
Depending on location, Fire TV customers will now have access to Eurosport’s coverage which includes Grand Slam tennis, cycling’s grand tours, all FIS World Cup and World Championship winter sports competitions and non-domestic rights to German soccer’s top-flight Bundesliga.
In 2020, this will extend to full coverage of the Tokyo 2020 Olympics in all countries where Eurosport has rights to the Games (France and Russia are excluded).
