Amazon teams up with BT Sport for Premier League pub distribution

Commercial premises to pay up to UK£600 a year for Amazon’s two live fixture rounds.

Global digital giant Amazon has appointed BT Sport to market its UK Premier League rights package in pubs and clubs, according to the Daily Telegraph.

The two partners will reportedly combine to create an ‘Amazon Premier League Pass’ for distribution via existing hardware in a move that does not require commercial premises to be existing BT Sport customers.

Amazon has picked up two exclusive packages to full match weeks from 2019/20 to 2021/22 – one Bank Holiday slate and one midweek fixture programme. For the upcoming English top-flight soccer season, the company has elected to exploit both sets of rights in December, airing every fixture between 3rd and 5th December, plus the popular Boxing Day games.

It is the first time a broadcaster has had rights to every game in a round of fixtures and means commercial premises will be able to show a total of 200 Premier League matches a season over the next three years.

The Amazon Premier League Pass will reportedly cost between UK£100 (US$122) and UK£600 (US$730) for the season, depending on the size of the establishment.

Earnings from pubs and clubs are a crucial part of broadcasters’ business plan for Premier League distribution, with Sky and BT Sport, the league’s domestic rights holders, paying a combined UK£5 billion over the course of the next cycle.

According to the Telegraph, individual pubs and clubs spend between UK£10,000 (US$12,150) and UK£30,000 (US$36,500) per year for access to Premier League programming, depending on their size.

Amazon secured increased distribution for its direct-to-consumer Prime Video service in the UK earlier this year in a deal that sees the streaming platform offered via Virgin Media V6 set-top boxes. The streaming platform is not currently available via Sky’s set-top boxes.
