Alibaba Cloud and Intel have reached a strategic memorandum of understanding which will see them collaborate on a variety of technology to be used at the 2020 Olympic Games.

The two International Olympic Committee (IOC) TOP partners are working on 360-degree 8K immersive virtual reality (VR) video experience for fans, with the 8K images being delivered over 5G mobile networks. According to Alibaba Cloud, the technology will eradicate dizziness for VR headset users and increase bandwidth efficiency fivefold.

3D Digital Twinning will be introduced, giving athletes, broadcasters and spectators access to VR simulations of tracks, camera deployments, stadium seating and in-stadium navigation services.

Both parties are also continuing their 3D push with 3D Athlete Tracking (3DAT). The system uses algorithms to analyse and extract athlete data in training or competition and is set to be used by trainers and broadcasters.

In addition, Cloud Broadcasting will be rolled out in partnership with the Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS), the IOC’s host broadcaster for the Games. The cloud broadcasting solution aims to boost efficiencies lost through offline and labour-based production, while reducing costs.

Rick Echeverria, the general manager of Intel’s Olympics Program, said: “Intel and Alibaba Cloud are long-term partners and have a common vision of translating technology into amazing experiences that excite athletes, spectators, broadcasters, media, stadium operators, hosting countries and the International Olympic Committee, enabling a more innovative Olympic Games experience.”
