German airline Lufthansa has become a national partner of the 2009 IAAF World Championships in Berlin in August. The Berlin meet will have the widest broadcast coverage in athletics World Championship history, and the airline has become the third of five national partners, joining Berlin energy supplier, Vattenfall Europe AG, and Deutsche Post AG, the world’s largest logistics company.

The World Championships will take place over eight days, and are expected to draw more than a million spectators, as well as 1,800 athletes from more than 200 countries. The Championships will be staged in the 74,845-seat Olympiastadion.

Lufthansa is the world’s fifth largest airline in terms of overall passengers carried, and has the third-largest passenger airline fleet in the world. Klaus Wowereit, the mayor of Berlin, said: “We are pleased with this strong brand – a further top partner for the championships to have won.”
