The XFL has agreed a deal with Genius Sports that sees the specialist firm become the spring football league’s betting data distribution partner and free-to-play gaming provider for the 2023 season.

Confirmed:

  • UK-based company will exclusively distribute XFL data to media and betting partners
  • Spring football league to integrate Genius’ suite of fan engagement tools
  • The deal sees the launch of a free, token-based ‘pick’em’ prediction game offering fans prizes

Context:

Genius is already the National Football League’s (NFL) official data partner, replacing rival Sportradar in 2021 by agreeing a deal worth US$120 million annually according to Sports Business Journal (SBJ). The XFL hopes that its latest comeback can be more successful than the original launch in 2001 and the 2020 reboot that was curtailed by the Covid-19 pandemic.

Comment:

“Genius is a leader in exploring the new frontier of next generation fan engagement,” said Wendy Bass, chief business and legal officer of the XFL.

“By working with Genius, we can leverage their expertise across technology and data management to make the XFL a more compelling and dynamic viewing experience for the benefit of fans, partners, and stakeholders.”

Coming next:

The XFL relaunched on 18th February with the audience figures both for its live broadcasts and attendances in stadia certain to be the subject of much scrutiny during its comeback season as it goes up against the Fox-backed United States Football League (USFL).
