When the Nashville Predators and San Jose Sharks meet in Prague on 7th October, it will mark the beginning of what the National Hockey League (NHL) is describing as its first ‘normal’ season since the 2018/19 campaign.
Indeed, taking regular season games overseas is something North America’s preeminent ice hockey league hasn’t been able to do for three years because of the pandemic, which even last campaign – when things were returning to some sort of normality – forced fixtures to be postponed.
Despite that, the NHL still enjoyed a prosperous 2021/22 season, which saw it surpass US$5 billion in annual revenue for the first time. Some of that growth can no doubt be attributed to the first year of the league’s new US media rights deals with Turner and ESPN, which are entering the second campaign of a seven-season deal worth a combined US$625 million annually.
The NHL has also created additional revenue opportunities for its franchises in recent years by allowing them to sell new sponsorship inventory. Brands have been able to advertise on team helmets for the last two seasons, but this campaign will be the first where clubs are allowed to feature a sponsor logo on their jerseys. Only a handful of franchises have so far secured patch partners, but the going rate is reportedly between US$5 million and US$10 million a year.
With the NHL returning to economic stability, deputy commissioner Bill Daly has said that the salary cap, which stands at US$82.5 million for this season, could increase by US$1 million for the 2023/24 campaign. In the meantime, he’s stressed that the league is focused on “continued growth”.
“The game’s never been in a better place than it is currently,” Daly said in an interview with NHL.com. “We had record revenues last year in a year that was still impacted by Covid, so we’re thinking the future’s really bright, and it starts now.”
With the 2022/23 NHL season set to get underway, SportsPro presents a commercial breakdown of every team, their sponsors, and all of the league’s major media rights deals.
