Another season of the Uefa Champions League gets underway on 6th September when Europe’s elite clubs meet in the opening round of group stage fixtures.
With the world’s biggest names involved, the tournament promises to deliver the same level of entertainment on the pitch, but behind the scenes it could prove to be comparatively quiet. The sport’s powerbrokers have spent much of the past 18 months trying to agree upon the future shape of European soccer after the failed launch of the Super League exposed those who are far from satisfied with the existing order.
Those threats are still lingering in the shadows but, for now at least, Uefa and the European Club Association (ECA) have agreed on a new format from 2024, when the Champions League will expand to 36 teams and do away with the existing six-game group phase. Each team will instead play eight fixtures each before the knockout round, meaning the competition will feature a total of 189 matches, up from the current 125.
More games of course means more money and another key agreement secured earlier this year saw Uefa appoint Team Marketing and Relevent Sports Group as its agency partners for the next three-year rights cycle. European soccer’s governing body said the deals will ‘guarantee’ increased revenues for participating clubs and ‘bigger solidarity payments’ for those outside Uefa club competitions, although it remains to be seen if the changes will narrow or widen the growing divide in the game.
Relevent has already agreed a new Champions League media rights deal in the US, where CBS has committed to paying a reported US$1.5 billion to continue showing the tournament for another six years from 2024. Improved deals have also been secured in key markets such as France and the UK, where Amazon has entered the fray for the first time.
For now, all roads lead to Istanbul’s Atatürk Olympic Stadium, which will host the Champions League final for a second time on 10th June. Ahead of kick-off, SportsPro presents a commercial rundown of all the teams involved in this season’s competition, along with all the key broadcast and sponsorship details.
