Promotion-chasing Leeds United handed big cash boost

29 January 2010 | By Adam Fraser

Leeds United, the former Premier League giants currently battling to win promotion from League One and begin their journey back to the English top flight, have already proved difficult opponents for more than one Premier League team this season.

Leeds, managed by Simon Grayson, beat Premier League champions Manchester United in the FA Cup thanks to a goal from Jermaine Beckford, before the same player's late equaliser against Tottenham Hotspur earned Leeds an upcoming replay at Elland Road.

Leeds have also reaped the financial rewards of their success in the competition so far. According to fan site Vital Leeds, 'Leeds picked up £67,500 for the coverage at Oldham, £108,000 altogether for both Kettering games, £152,100 from the Man United game and £232,200 from the two games with Spurs. Leeds will pick up another £255,600 for the tie at Bolton, if they can get past Spurs.

'Leeds have so far picked up £112,500 for reaching the fourth round in prize money, beating Spurs would be worth another £90,000.'

From the fifth round onwards, the prize money continues to increase. The fifth round winners will be handed £180,000, with £360,000 going to sixth-round winners. Semi-final winners will be handed £900,000 - with £450,000 on offer to the runners up - while winning the competition is worth £1,800,000, and losing in the final an additional £900,000.

Leeds can also look forward to a significant boost from gate receipts at Elland Road for the match against Spurs.
