Manchester United set to lose millions from tour cancellation
Manchester United are expected to lose up to US$2 million after cancelling a lucrative pre-season friendly in Indonesia, in the wake of Friday's terrorist attacks in the country. At least nine people were killed and 48 injured in blasts at two five-star hotels in the capital Jakarta.
The 73-strong United touring party were due to arrive in the city on Saturday and stay in the Ritz-Carlton, one of the affected hotels ahead of the game on Monday. The match, against an all-star team from the Indonesian Super League, was a 100,000 sell-out and had been heavily promoted locally.
In a brief statement, released after United spent hours in talks with local security teams and its own in-house security team following the attacks, the club expressed its “deep disappointment” at being unable to fulfil the fixture. It added: "We are working on a revised itinerary with the promoters, and will make a further announcement when these decisions have been made." It is unclear how the cancellation will affect the club's US$1 million a year three-and-a-half year sponsorship agreement with 3 Indonesia, a local telecom firm, signed in April. The company was set to be the official partner of the two-day Indonesian leg of the tour.
The four-match, four-country South East Asian tour is the most comprehensive undertaken by the English Premier League champions who have made a habit of touring the region in recent summers, visiting in five of the last ten years. Generally the trips, which feature the entire first team squad, generate around US$8 million. United's chief executive David Gill said: "Our fans in Asia generate money for the club – there are no two ways about it. But it's a coordinated approach. Most of the players have been at the club a number of years, they're seasoned professionals and understand the importance of the tours to the club. We can't get away from the fact that it is a long way, but the crowds over there give absolutely fanatical support for Manchester United."
The United squad are currently in the Malaysian capital Kuala Lumpur preparing for the first match of the tour on Saturday. On Friday, following the team's arrival, some 50,000 people attended an open training session in the city. The two other tour games later in the tour, against FC Seoul in South Korea and Chinese team Hangzhou Greentown, are unaffected.
