Real Madrid president Perez calls for Super League
German club Bayern Munich, England's 'big four' - Manchester United, Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool - and Italian giants AC Milan, Internazionale and Juventus are the first names on Real Madrid president Florentino Perez's list as he once again begins his campaign for the introduction of a European Super League.
Perez, who has spent well over US$200 million on players in his first five weeks back at the helm of Real, is a long-time advocate of a closed-shop competition featuring Europe's biggest and most successful clubs. He insist he is ready to take on Uefa, the governing body of European soccer, in a bid to make the competition become reality.
- Manchester United: The world's 8th most valuable sports property
- Arsenal FC: The world's 21st most valuable sports property
- Liverpool FC: The world's 27th most valuable sports property
The extended format of the Champions League, which now includes a lucrative group stage and seedings to keep the bigger teams apart until the later rounds, was enough to see off the threat of the Super League last time the idea was given serious consideration. That, though, is not enough for Perez. "We have to agree a new European Super League which guarantees that the best always play the best — something that does not happen in the Champions League," he insisted on Spanish television this weekend.
