Texas Rangers business unaffected by Tom Hicks’ financial woes

10 July 2009 | By Adam Fraser

Nolan Ryan, team president of the Texas Rangers, insists the current financial woes of Tom Hicks are not affecting business at his sports franchises.

Hicks, who owns the Dallas Stars and English soccer club Liverpool in addition to the Rangers, dissolved Hicks Sports Marketing Group last week as he looks to sell the franchise. In early April, the Hicks Sports Group defaulted on more than US$500 million in loans. Meanwhile, Major League Baseball is reported to have made US$15 million available to the Rangers to help pay operating costs, including player wages.

However, Ryan insists the Rangers activity with regards to player trades remains unaffected. "If we have something that would be beneficial, we would bring it to Tom," he said. "There haven't been any restrictions put on us."

Ryan also added that he does not expect any sale of the Rangers to be completed soon. "I don't expect to see anything happen during the course of the season," he said. "If there's an ownership change, I think it'll be in the offseason or the spring. That's just my expectation."

George Gillett, co-owner of Liverpool with Hicks, recently agreed to sell his Montreal Canadiens NHL franchise for more than US$500 million.
