Arsenal unlikely to host World Cup matches in 2018
The Emirates Stadium is looking increasingly unlikely to host matches at the 2018 World Cup if England's bid to host the tournament is successful.
Should England win the right to host the 2018 World Cup, the only stadium guaranteed to host matches is Wembley, the national stadium. With only one other London stadium likely to be selected, a source close to the 2018 bid confirmed to SportsPro that Tottenham and Arsenal are expected to go head to head, with no other London grounds seriously in the running. The same source confirmed that the fact that Tottenham's stadium will be built more than half a decade later is likely to give it the edge.
Meanwhile, the club itself is reportedly unwilling to fully commit to the process. 'Arsenal have yet to sign up to the FA bid because some of the Fifa regulations are so open-ended and Arsenal's plc company want to know exactly what their contractual responsibilities would be before they put pen to paper,' claimed the Daily Mail newspaper today.
