New Tottenham stadium expected to beat Arsenal’s Emirates to host World Cup
Tottenham Hotspur's new stadium will go head to head with Arsenal's Emirates Stadium, widely seen as the most state of the art stadium in English soccer, to host 2018 World Cup matches should England's bid prove successful.
Spurs revealed plans yesterday for the new 56250-capacity ground, to be built adjacent to the team's current White Hart Lane ground and operational by 2012.
Should England win the right to host the 2018 World Cup, the only stadium guaranteed to host matches is Wembley, the national stadium. With only one other London stadium likely to be selected, a source close to the 2018 bid confirmed to SportsPro that Tottenham and Arsenal are expected to go head to head, with no other London grounds seriously in the running. The same source confirmed that the fact that Tottenham's stadium will be built more than half a decade later is likely to give it the edge.

Tottenham's plans also includes 434 new homes, a 150-room hotel and a supermarket. "We have designed what will be a vibrant area 365 days a year and not a stadium with dead space surrounding it," said Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy to the BBC. "Our desire from the outset has been to create a scheme of major benefit for local people and to deliver the most fan-friendly stadium in Europe.
"The inclusion of a new single-tier stand combined with a fantastic stadium design demonstrates our absolute commitment to create the most atmospheric stadium for our supporters. Every fan will have an exceptional view of the action and will find themselves closer to the pitch than at any other comparable stadium."
