Hendrick Motorsports have entered into a two-year commercial partnership with Liberty University, the private non-profit Christian university located in Virginia, USA.
The Lynchburg educational institute will be the primary sponsor of Hendrick Motorsports driver William Byron’s number 24 car for 12 Monster Energy Nascar Cup Series races in both 2018 and 2019.
The 19-year old’s rookie season in Nascar’s premier championship will be the fourth consecutive year that Liberty University has supported the American stock car starlet. Byron is currently a sophomore enrolled at the university working toward an undergraduate business communications degree through the school’s online program.
Although the financial terms of the 12-race deal were not released, trends in Nascar would suggest that Liberty University would be expecting to pay Hendrick Motorsports US$7.2 million per season.
In 2016, Byron produced the most successful debut season in the third-tier Nascar Camping World Truck Series history with a national series rookie record seven victories. He currently stands second in the second-tier Nascar Xfinity Series after three wins at Iowa, Daytona and Indianapolis in 2017.
“My experience with Liberty University has been awesome on so many levels,” Byron said. “I’m lucky to have them support my driving career, but I’ve also lived on campus and seen first-hand how they lift up their students. I’m grateful for what they’ve done for me both professionally and academically, and it’s very cool to have them take this next step and continue working with us on the No. 24 team.”
Jerry Falwell, president of Liberty University, added: “Since we first met William, he has never ceased to amaze us with his skills on the racetrack, the strong Christian values he displays and his focus on academics.”
