A Spanish entry has been confirmed for the 2014/15 Volvo Ocean Race.
The campaign, which has support from Spain's National Sports Council and the Royal Spanish Sailing Federation, will be led by Pedro Campos.
Campos was previously in charge of Movistar's entry on the 2005/06 race and Telefónica's two-boat efforts in 2008/09 and 2011/12.
“We’re happy to see Spain’s presence again in sailing’s leading offshore race, the Volvo Ocean Race. For our team it is an honour to have a fifth boat participating in succession, a record in the history of the race,” said Campos.
Iker Martínez and Xabi Fernández, who sailed on the Telefónica boat during the 2011/12 race, will lead the crew.
No sponsors were confirmed as the Volvo Ocean Race announced the sixth entry in the race. The Spanish entry joins Team SCA, Abu Dhabi Ocean Racing, Dongfeng Race Team, Team Brunel from Holland and the American-run, Turkish-backed Team Alvimedica in the 2014/15 race, which begins from Alicante on 4th October. A Spanish entry has never won the round-the-world race.
