German car manufacturer Volkswagen has been announced as an 'institutional partner and official supplier' to Italian soccer team AS Roma.
According to Volkswagen Italia director general Massimo Nordio, Volkswagen's sponsorship of the Serie A side will last for one year, "with the option to continue together in the future."
"The reasons for this agreement are in the brand," Nordio added, "Volkswagen is a perfect partner for football. Football is important to us: we have a partnership with the national teams of Brazil, Argentina and Russia and we're the owners of Wolfsburg. Why Roma? Because we realised that the club has acquired a multinational dimension and, in our opinion, they are Italy's most multinational club. And of course the Giallorossi brand also represents the city."
"I'd like to welcome Volkswagen into our family," said AS Roma marketing director Christoph Winterling. "This is much more than a sponsorship and it's an agreement that shows us we're on the right path, continuing our philosophy for communicating with our partners. It's a significant choice: we know Volkswagen weigh up their investments in sport very carefully, they look at every aspect. We don't see Volkswagen only as a sponsor, but the partner that Roma need."
Though financial terms of the agreement were not released, in a statement on AS Roma's official website, Winterling described how Volkswagen made "a substantial investment in several areas of great importance” to the club.
Specific details of how Volkswagen will serve in its dual role as an institutional partner and an official supplier to AS Roma remain undisclosed.
