Australia’s best-selling beer Victoria Bitter (VB) has signed a multi-million dollar deal to become the major sponsor of State of Origin team the New South Wales (NSW) Blues.

The brewery will continue its title sponsorship of the NSW VB Blues beyond 2011. The four-year deal includes sponsorship of the NSW Cup and Country Rugby League competitions from 2012 onwards. Exact finances of the deal were not released.

VB is also the official beer of the National Rugby League (NRL) and the title sponsor of the Australian national rugby league team, the VB Kangaroos.

Craig MacLean, marketing manager for the VB Group, said: “The opportunity to take the naming rights position with the Blues and to be a key part of the state’s rugby league future is an exciting one.

“We have enjoyed a long partnership with rugby league and with the Blues, one which is genuine and links the state’s premier beer with the biggest sport in NSW.”

Australian Rugby League chairman John Chalk added: “There has been an incredible amount of work gone into this year’s Origin campaign and the VB sponsorship announcement is a key part of building the team’s success.

“The strength of the NSW Cup and the Country Rugby League competitions is also an important part of keeping the game strong in the state. These competitions play an important role in developing players, and by supporting them VB is giving its support to the heart and soul of the game in New South Wales.”

The NSW VB Blues face arch-rival the Queensland Maroons in the annual State of Origin Series, with matches from the best-of-three series taking place this year on Wednesday 25th May, Wednesday 15th June and Wednesday 6th July.
