Tencent Sports agrees rights deal with Fifa

Tencent Sports has reached an agreement with Fifa to become the exclusive digital media rights holder in China for the upcoming 2017 Fifa Confederations Cup in Russia.

The deal will see the online sports platform provide live streaming of the international soccer tournament, as well as offering video-on-demand, highlights and original programmes across its various digital channels. 

Additionally, Tencent Sports has acquired the exclusive media rights in China for the 2017 Fifa U17 World Cup, which will be held in India in October.

“The Fifa Confederations Cup is a tournament featuring the best national teams and players in the world,” said Ewell Zhao, general manager of Tencent Sports. “The collaboration with Fifa, the top governing body of football, offers Chinese fans access to the world’s top football games on Tencent’s various platforms.”

Philippe Le Floc’h, Fifa’s chief commercial officer, added: “We are very pleased to be partnering with the leading internet service provider in China to give local fans access to the Fifa Confederations Cup 2017 and the Fifa U17 World Cup 2017 online, anytime, anywhere. 

“As one of the largest internet companies in the world, Tencent owns the most popular social and media platforms in China, making it an ideal home for Fifa competitions. This agreement with Tencent marks our most significant collaboration yet with China’s digital media sector, and serves as a key step forward for Fifa.”

The 2017 Fifa Confederations Cup kicks off on Saturday 17th June, when host nation Russia take on New Zealand in St Petersburg.
