China’s Super Sports Media has secured the exclusive digital media rights to the first two editions of the Uefa Nations League, a new international soccer tournament being organised by European soccer’s governing body.
The agreement will see the broadcaster show the inaugural 2018/19 competition, followed by the 2020/21 edition.
The deal adds to Super Sports’ portfolio of soccer content, which already includes rights for England’s Premier League. The financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
Uefa last week confirmed that the Nations League will feature promotion and relegation, and will see the continent’s 55 national teams divided into four leagues in accordance with their national association coefficient rankings.
The competition is intended to replace the bulk of international friendlies currently played in Europe with a competition format which will see nations of a similar ability play each other more often.
The draw for the 2018/19 Uefa Nations League is scheduled to take place in January. The first edition of the tournament will begin on 6th September 2018, with the finals due to be staged in June 2019.
