German pay broadcaster Sport Digital has acquired the rights to this weekend's WBC International heavyweight title fight between Odlanier Solis and Tony Thompson, in what appears to be a move away from its soccer-dominated roots.
The broadcaster will show Saturday's fight from Istanbul. According to German sports business news portal Sponsors.de, Sport Digital is trialing boxing coverage to examine the reaction amongst viewers.
In soccer, Sport Digital holds the rights to top leagues in Argentina, the Netherlands, Russia, Poland and Portugal, as well as England's second-tier Championship. The subscription service reaches around 1.5 million households across Germany, Austria and Switzerland.
American Thompson and Cuba's Solis will fight for the vacant, but little-known, WBC International heavyweight title in Turkey. In 2011 Solis suffered a knee injury against WBC heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko, while Thompson has fought Wladmiri Klitschko on two occasions, losing in both 2008 and 2012.
