Multi Screen Media-owned Indian broadcaster Sony Six will air the inaugural Golf Premier League (GPL) after a deal was struck with the organisers.

The GPL, the latest franchise-based sports promotion to be rolled out in India, will take place at the Aamby Valley City course near the western city of Pune from 8th to 10th February.

The US$400,000 tournament will feature eight city-based franchises which will hire four golfers each. A mixture of foreign and local players are signed up. Star names include Darren Clarke, Angel Cabrera and Michael Campbell.

The three-round tournament will feature two day/night rounds of strokeplay and a final round played to the best-ball format. Each round will be played over 14 holes.

Indian golfer Shiv Kapur and his co-founding partner Neeraj Sareen said of the deal with Sony Six: "We believe that the format of play during the GPL will be interesting for live viewing and are confident of the reach that Sony Six can provide as a platform to help us take golf to a larger audience in India."

Multi Screen Media chief executive Manjit Singh said: "The GPL is an important step towards the evolution of golf as a popular spectator sport in India. I am sure that the unique format, coming together of world-class players and other exciting aspects including day and night golf will make for a compelling viewing for our audience."
