Setanta to show EPL highlights after RTÉ pulls out
Setanta Ireland has acquired a package of Premier League highlights ahead of the 2013/14 season kick-off on Saturday.
The pay-TV network, which agreed a deal in May to show 33 live Premier League games a year until the end of the 2015/16 season, will now also show a highlights programme every Saturday and Sunday evening throughout the upcoming season.
Setanta replaces RTÉ, which announced in June that it would not be bidding for the rights to show Premier League highlights this year. According to Independent.ie, the move is likely to save RTÉ around €1.3 million a year.
Setanta’s shows will air every Saturday at 8.30pm and 10.30pm on Sundays.

The network agreed a deal with BT in June to add BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN to its view pack, expanding Setanta’s Premier League offering to 71 games per season.
“The addition of a Premier League highlights show every Saturday and Sunday is another statement of our renewed commitment to Irish Premier League fans. When the rights became available we were determined to make sure that Irish football fans wouldn’t miss out on getting a highlights programme with an Irish angle,” Brian Quinn, the marketing operations director of Setanta Sports said.
“It is a very exciting time for us at Setanta with the recent addition of the BT Sport 1, BT Sport 2 and ESPN channels to the Setanta Sports pack. To have 71 Barclays Premier League games this season including 18 top picks is fantastic and to now have two Premier League highlights shows each week is a further boost for our subscribers and viewers.
“From a production perspective it is a big challenge for this first weekend as we have only just concluded the deal. Thankfully we have a lot of resources in place for our live Premier League shows that we can use on the new Premier League Central show.”
