The Alfa Romeo Sauber Formula One team have launched their own esports venture.
The Swiss racing outfit have partnered with gaming organisation Veloce Esports to manage the new team, which will be known as Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 esports.
The team will compete across multiple racing platforms and championships, but will first take part in the F1 esports Series, which gets underway in London on 9th July.
As part of the deal with Veloce, Sauber’s esports team will train, compete and live stream in partnership with the company, which is based in London. Sauber said the team will be entered into the leading racing titles, as well as popular survival game Fortnite.
“Esports is a great opportunity that opens up the Formula One world to a wider target audience and young generation, who are the future of our sport,” said Frédéric Vasseur, chief executive and team principal for Sauber.
“The esports drivers will benefit from our expertise in racing. Our team has a long tradition in scouting and growing young talent so this new challenge is a perfect fit for the Alfa Romeo Sauber F1 team.”
Sauber are the latest Formula One team to launch their own esports outfit, and all of the global motorsport series’ teams excluding Ferrari will compete in this year’s F1 esports Series.
Rupert Svendsen-Cook, business director at Veloce, added: “The whole motor racing world is waking up to esports and the multi-dimensional opportunities that it presents – it’s incredibly exciting times for us in this space.”
