The National Hockey League (NHL) has announced that the San Jose Sharks will host its 2019 All-Star Weekend.
The three-day event, which will be the 64th edition of the league’s mid-season showpiece, will take place at the California-based franchise’s SAP Center between 25th and 27th January 2019. The NHL All-Star skills competition will kick off the weekend, which will culminate in the NHL All-Star Game exhibition match between the best ice hockey players from the NHL’s Pacific, Central, Atlantic, and Metropolitan divisions.
2019 will mark the second time that San Jose has hosted the NHL All-Star Weekend, more than 20 years on from when it staged the 47th edition in 1997.
“We are thankful and thrilled that the NHL has decided, once again, to bring one of its premier events to San Jose,” said John Tortora, co-president of the San Jose Sharks. “NHL All-Star Weekend is for our loyal and outstanding fans, who have eagerly anticipated the return of this event, and for the city of San Jose as the hockey world descends to shine an international spotlight on our great city.”
“All-Star Weekend brings the NHL family together in celebration of our sport,” said NHL commissioner Gary Bettman. “Our players, our teams, our fans and our partners gather around a number of very special events and activities, and our host city steps into a bright worldwide spotlight.
“In 2019, our stars will display their skills and the city of San Jose, SAP Center at San Jose and the Sharks will showcase their hospitality. We're looking forward to a terrific All-Star Weekend in San Jose.”
The decision to award San Jose the 2019 NHL All-Star Weekend came during this year’s edition of the event in Tampa, Florida, where Brock Boeser of the Vancouver Canucks was voted the Most Valuable Player (MVP).
