The National Basketball Association’s (NBA) Sacramento Kings have teamed up with Seattle-based software company Zipwhip to become the first professional sports team to use next-gen Rich Communication Services (RCS) texting.

The platform will allow the US basketball outfit to send fans tickets, schedules and other general information without forcing them to check their email or use a specialised app.

The feature has initially been made available for Android users on the Sprint network via the Kings’ toll-free number, 833-91KINGS. The innovation is not yet open to fans on another mobile carrier or iPhone users.

The move comes ahead of the start of the new NBA season, which the Kings begin with a home game against the Utah Jazz on 17th October.
