Red Bull Media House strikes landmark Fox deal

Red Bull Media House has secured arguably its most significant TV deal to date after agreeing terms with American broadcaster Fox Sports.

Beginning in 2014, the agreement covers four competitions that form the Red Bull World Series: Crashed Ice, X-Fighters, Cliff Diving and Air Race.

The three-year deal provides Fox with 180 hours of live and highlight programming, with the events set to air on Fox Sports 1 and Fox Sports 2, the broadcaster’s new national sports networks.

It is the media company’s first TV rights agreement with a major US broadcaster. Earlier this year, BT Sport agreed a similar deal for the UK.

“For the first time, all four global sporting series created by Red Bull will be available in the US, united on one network home,” Werner Brell, the managing director of Red Bull Media House North America, said in a statement.

“The deal with Fox Sports 1 is the largest US licensing deal with a single network for Red Bull Media House.”

Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed but it is estimated to be worth around US$1 million.

Several of the events covered under the deal have been aired on NBC and NBC Sports Network since Red Bull Media House North America was created in Santa Monica, California in 2011.

According to Sports Business Daily’s Tripp Mickle, Red Bull Media House is nearing the final year of a three-year, revenue-sharing agreement with NBC’s Alliance of Action Sports.

That deal provides 23 hours of programming for Crashed Ice and other events under the Red Bull banner and, according to Mickle, a new event will replace the Red Bull Crashed Ice World Championship on NBC next year.
