French Ligue 1 soccer side Olympique Lyonnais have announced a partnership with Chinese esports organisation Edward Gaming (EDG).
The agreement will see Les Gones add three new players to their existing roster competing in Chinese Fifa Online 3, the mobile version of the soccer video game series available in China, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore.
Under the terms of the deal, Lyon will rename their esports team Lyon EDG esports club.
The financial terms of the partnership have not been disclosed.
In March, Lyon became the first European soccer club to participate in esports in China when they signed four Fifa Online 3 players: Song Di, Xu Qingmu, Sun Jiangfeng and player/manager Feng Rui. They also signed a French Fifa player, Fouad ‘Rasfou’ Fares, in January.
In 2016, Chinese investment firm IDG Capital Partners purchased a 20 per cent stake in Lyon for US$111 million.
Olympique Lyonnais finished fourth in Ligue 1 in 2016/17 and have made a strong start to the 2017/18 season, winning six of their opening 11 games. They beat FC Metz 2-0 on 29th October, and will face Everton on Thursday in the Uefa Europa League.
