PCCW-owned broadcasters Now TV and Viu TV have secured the rights in Hong Kong to the 2018 Fifa World Cup in Russia.
The deal will see Now TV – a pay-TV channel - provide live coverage of all 64 games from the flagship international tournament, while Viu TV will show 19 live matches on free-to-air television, including the opening fixture, the two semi-finals and the final.
Additionally, Now TV will show today’s draw for the group stages of the competition. Meanwhile, Viu TV will produce a series of supporting programmes in the build-up to and during the tournament.
Janice Lee, managing director of PCCW Media Group, said: “With our extensive experience in producing and broadcasting large-scale international and local sporting events, including La Liga, Premier League, Uefa Europa League and Uefa Euro 2016, Now TV aims to offer viewers superb World Cup enjoyment, whether on a live or on-demand basis, on our TV, internet and mobile platforms. And with ViuTV’s local production strength and creativity, we aim to add more excitement and entertainment to this mega event for the enjoyment of viewers in Hong Kong.
Philippe Le Floc’h, Fifa’s chief commercial officer, added that Fifa was “very pleased to be working with such a strong broadcast partner” and to be sharing the passion of the event with Hong Kong’s “huge football fan base.”
The 2018 Fifa World Cup will be the 21st edition of the tournament, and is scheduled to take place between 14th June and 15th July next year.
