Nike has re-signed National Football League (NFL) star Odell Beckham Jr to what is understood to be the richest shoe deal ever signed by a pro football player.
Terms of the agreement, first reported by Nick DePaula of Nice Kicks, have not been disclosed, but ESPN’s Darren Rovell reports that Beckham Jr, the New York Giants wide receiver, has signed ‘a five-year deal worth in the neighbourhood of US$5 million a year’.
That figure is ‘about two times more than any previous deal Nike had with a football player’, reports Rovell, and was driven up by Adidas’ interest in signing Beckham Jr, whose previous Nike contract expired on 1st May. Nike had a ten-day window to match any offer from a rival brand.
Commenting on Twitter, NFL reporter Ian Rapoport said on Tuesday that the deal, negotiated on Beckham Jr’s behalf by his agent Zeke Sandhu, includes a clause that could see it extended to eight years.
"It was a long process," Sandhu told ESPN. "This proved he's an icon.”
Beckham Jr, 24, has emerged as one of the NFL’s most recognisable and marketable players since being drafted by the Giants in 2014. As well as Nike, he also has commercial deals with Exos Performance Nutrition, Trojan, Roar Beverages and Steiner Sports.
Last year, Beckham Jr was named 13th in SportsPro’s list of the world’s 50 most marketable athletes.
