Newcastle legend gambles on ambassadorial status
English soccer legend Alan Shearer has signed a two-year contract with online betting firm Dafabet.
The former Newcastle United and England striker, now a television pundit with the BBC and Al Jazeera, has agreed to become a brand ambassador in Asia for the Philippines-based sports betting and gambling website.
As an Asian ambassador, Shearer will front the company’s promotional campaign within the continent. His image will also be used on the Dafabet.com website. Financial terms of the agreement were not released.
Dimitris Karatzas, online gaming director for Dafabet, said: “We are absolutely delighted to secure the support of such a great ambassador as Alan Shearer for our advertising and promotional campaigns in Asia. Without doubt Alan is one of the most respected figures in football today and a true sportsman. We are looking forward to a long partnership with him.”
Shearer won 63 England caps between 1992 and 2000, during which time he scored 30 goals for his country, won the Golden Boot at Euro 96 and captained the national team on 34 occasions.
At club level, he began his professional career at Southampton, moved to Blackburn Rovers where he became a Premier League championship winner in the 1994/95 season, before spending ten years at boyhood club Newcastle United from 1996 to 2006.
