More government money goes on Commonwealth games
India's government has added another US$181 million to its budget for the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi. The new figure, which more than doubles the previous figure of US$163 million, is just the latest of a series of bail-outs the Games have needed.
"It has been felt important to increase the amount because of the inclusion of new items that are essential for the successful delivery of the Games that were not provided in the initial budget," said Indian government minister Ambika Soni told reporters.
The 2010 competition will be the first time the Commonwealth Games have ever been held in India. The Games, held every four years, feature the best athletes from the states which make up the Commonwealth of Nations, including Canada, Australia and South Africa as well as England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
