La Liga, the body responsible for the top-tier league of Spanish soccer, has announced a new initiative with video streaming firm Grabyo that will see it broadcast a soccer game live on Facebook for the first time.
The Spanish women’s first division fixture between Atletico Madrid Feminas and Athletic Club on Saturday 28th May will be aired via the social media site’s new Facebook Live platform.
Grabyo, Facebook’s official streaming partner, will broadcast the game in TV quality with no geo-blocking.
The social video specialist has worked with La Liga since early 2015, helping the league to distribute short-form video clips to Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
The news comes amid a growing trend of sports being broadcast away from traditional TV coverage. Earlier this month, BT Sport agreed a deal with YouTube to live stream the Uefa Europa League and Uefa Champions League finals, while in April Twitter acquired the rights to National Football League (NFL) Thursday night games.
