Dubai Duty Free has extended its sponsorship of horse racing’s Irish Derby for a further year.
The company, which is responsible for the duty-free operations at Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport, will continue to be the title partner of the 12-furlong flat horse race, due to take place at the Curragh Racecourse in County Kildare on 30th June this year.
Dubai Duty Free will also sponsor five other races on the same day as the title sponsor of the three-day Irish Derby Festival itself. The company began its sponsorship of the main event in 2008, having initially partnered with Curragh Racecourse in 2002.
The total prize money for the 2018 Irish Derby will remain at €1.5 million (US$1.9 million), with the winner receiving a cool €850,000 (US$1.1 million).
Derek McGrath, chief executive of Curragh Racecourse, said: “Dubai Duty Free have been outstanding partners of the Curragh and I would like to acknowledge the significant contribution that Colm McLoughlin and his team have made to the success of the Irish Derby over the past ten years.”
Colm McLoughlin, executive vice chairman and chief executive of Dubai Duty Free, added: “We are delighted to extend our partnership with the Curragh for 2018 and happy that our association with the Curragh has grown over the years. The Dubai Duty Free Irish Derby is now a weekend festival of quality racing and entertainment and the media exposure generated greatly raises the profile of our brand in Ireland.”
Dubai Duty Free joins Irish Sweepstakes and Anheuser-Busch/Budweiser as the third sponsor of this year’s Irish Derby, which has taken place annually since 1866.
