Globosat to air decade of World Athletics in Brazil

14 December 2010 | Posted in Broadcast, Athletics, South America | By Eoin Connolly

Satellite and cable broadcaster Globosat has secured the Brazilian television rights to all IAAF World Athletics Series events, including the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, for the period between 2014 and 2019.

The deal is a renewal of Globosat's existing agreement with the IAAF and was brokered by Dentsu, who exclusively represent the athletics governing body's marketing and media rights outside Europe and Africa. It is understood to be worth a low seven-figure sum, with a bonus included should the World Athletics Championships follow the Olympic Summer Games to Brazil at any point while the contract is in effect.

IAAF president Lamine Diack said: "This deal despite the tough worldwide economic climate has resulted in a strong financial increase, which is an encouraging barometer for the popularity of our sport in Brazil. This agreement until 2019 shows a confidence that the increasing interest for athletics in the country will continue to grow, rising on the crest of a wave of young attractive stars such as Fabiana Murer, the reigning World Indoor Pole Vault champion."

As well as the biennial World Championship in Athletics, the World Athletics Series includes the World Indoor Championships and World Junior Championships.
