Formula E has extended its partnership with tyre manufacturer Michelin ahead of this weekend’s first ePrix of the 2017/18 season in Hong Kong.
The company is one of the founding partners of the all-electric racing series, and will continue to serve as the championship’s tyre supplier until the end of the 2020/21 season, retaining a role it has held since the inaugural campaign in 2014.
Alejandro Agag, founder and chief executive of Formula E, said: “Michelin believed in the concept of the championship since before day one, sharing our vision as an innovative platform to test and develop technology for future road vehicles.
“Formula E is about forward-thinking and Michelin has built a tyre specific to our needs, but also relevant to the everyday cars we drive at home. I’m looking forward to working closely with Michelin until the end of season seven and beyond.”
Pascal Couasnon, Michelin’s motorsport director, added: “After having developed innovations such as the first highly energy efficient 18-inch competition tyres for single-seaters, Michelin will continue its research and technology transfer work during the coming seasons.
“With the partnership set to continue through to the end of the 2020/21 season, the company is already working on tyres for the new-look next-generation car, which will make its debut in season five.”
Meanwhile, Formula E has been forced to postpone São Paulo’s debut Formula E round until 2019, because the Brazilian city’s authorities are in the process of selling off the planned venue.
The São Paulo race was one of four new stages on Formula E’s 2017/18 calendar, alongside the Italian capital of Rome, Zürich in Switzerland and the Chilean capital of Santiago. The championship’s organisers said that a replacement for the Brazilian round will be presented to the International Automobile Federation (FIA) in Paris, France next week.
