Eurosport snaps up Ski Classics rights in Sweden

Discovery Communications-owned Eurosport Sweden has acquired the national broadcast rights to the Ski Classics for the 2017/18 season.

The pan-European broadcaster will show all 11 races of the Europe-based long-distance cross-country skiing series on its Swedish free-to-air channel Kanal 5. The races will also be streamed via the Eurosport Player over-the-top (OTT) service.

Eurosport Sweden replaces Swedish public-service broadcaster SVT, which showed the Ski Classics in 2016.

“The Ski Classics fits well with our strategy to continue building our sports brand with exclusive and locally relevant sporting rights,” said Emir Osmanbegovic, sports director at Eurosport and Discovery Networks Sweden.

"We are very excited to land this agreement with Eurosport,” added David Nilsson, president of the Ski Classics. “The competitions will be broadcast on Kanal 5, a quality channel with amazing sports rights like the upcoming Winter Olympics and the national team's qualifying matches in football. I'm sure this agreement can lift the Ski Classics to the next level in the Swedish market."

Eurosport’s coverage of the Ski Classics will begin with the season-opening race in Pontresina, Switzerland, on 26th November. The Swedish race on the 2017/18 calendar is the Vasaloppet, which is due to take place on 4th March.

Discovery agreed a €1.3 billion (US$1.5 billion) deal in 2015 for the European rights, , excluding Russia, for four editions of the Olympic Games from PyeongChang 2018 onwards.
