Spanish soccer club Deportivo Alavés have announced Rioja Alavesa – a local wine region – as the club’s new front of shirt sponsor.
The partnership, part of an agreement between Deportivo and the Álava provincial council, will see Rioja Alavesa branding appear on the club’s shirt for La Liga and Copa del Rey matches.
The new agreement launched on 24th January, during the second leg of Deportivo’s Copa del Rey quarter-final against Alcorcón. Although the game was drawn 0-0, Deportivo progress to the semis with a 2-0 aggregate victory.
Neither the financial details, nor the duration of the partnership have been confirmed.
Ramiro González, Álava’s deputy general, expressed satisfaction over the global exposure that Deportivo Alavés’ cup run would bring the local region.
Rioja Alavesa also served as Deportivo Alavés’ front of shirt sponsor during the 2000/01 season, when the side had a memorable Uefa Cup campaign. They reached the competition’s final, which they lost to Liverpool 5-4 after extra time.
