BP expands biggest sponsorship deal in its history

BP will be the official fuel supplier and a national sponsor of next year's Fifa World Cup, to be held in South Africa.

The agreement is thought to be an expansion of the sponsorship under which Castrol, BP's oil brand, is an official Fifa World Cup partner. BP Africa chief executive Sipho Maseko said the deal is now the largest in the company's 100-year history. It will see the company provide millions of gallons of fuel for generators at the World Cup stadiums, minimising the risk of blackouts at world soccer's flagship tournament.

The competition, which kicks off in just under one year, is one of the most lucrative events in sport, providing Fifa with over 90 per cent of its income. The continued investment of major automotive sponsors in soccer is in stark contrast to their behaviour in most other sports, including motorsports.

The 2010 edition will be held in South Africa, and will feature 32 teams from around the world.
