Swiss watchmaker Hublot has become the official timekeeper of Portuguese soccer side Benfica.
Under the terms of the agreement, Hublot will provide the Lisbon outfit’s players and staff with a limited edition Classic Fusion Chronograph SL Benfica watch. It will also enjoy a strong brand presence at the Benfica’s home ground, the Estádio da Luz, and on the club’s various digital platforms.
The financial terms of the agreement have not been released.
"If I had to take someone who didn't like football to a match, it'd be to the Estádio da Luz,” said Ricardo Guadalupe, chief executive of Hublot. “It is one of those magic places where passion for football is born and nurtured. Benfica is a legendary club that made football history by founding the national league in 1934 and has never left the top division.”
Hublot has sponsorship agreements in place with a host of elite European soccer sides such as German champions Bayern Munich, Serie A champions Juventus, English league leaders Chelsea and Eredivisie team Ajax. It is also able to call on brand ambassadors of the ilk of three-time Fifa World Cup winner Pele, Argentinian great Diego Maradona and Manchester United’s Portuguese manager Jose Mourinho.
In their 113-year history Benfica have won 35 Portuguese league titles, 25 Portuguese Cups, seven League Cups, and six Super Cups, and have twice been European champions.
