BeIN Sports secures Championship soccer rights in Australia

Qatari-owned broadcaster BeIN Media Group has secured a TV rights deal in Australia with the English Football League (EFL) for second-tier Championship soccer matches, as well as the EFL Cup.

As part of the deal, the network will also show matches for League One and League Two, with all new coverage to begin immediately.

BeIN is to broadcast live games weekly throughout the 2017/18 season, as well as providing coverage of play-off matches and a weekly highlights show. The financial terms of the agreement have not been disclosed.

The partnership comes after BeIN Sports broadcast the Championship across its three channels during the 2016/17 season.

With the new deal, the company adds to its portfolio of European soccer broadcasting rights in Australia, which include the continental Uefa Champions League and Uefa Europa League, Germany’s Bundesliga, Spain’s La Liga, and Italy’s Serie A.

The English second tier currently features several Australian players, including Queen’s Park Rangers midfielder Massimo Luongo, Hull City’s Jackson Irvine and Aston Villa’s Mile Jedinak, as well as Bristol City captain Bailey Wright.
