The mobile phone service provider Be Mobile, the mobile phone arm of the state-owned Botswana Telecommunications Corporation (BTC), has agreed a three year sponsorship deal with the Botswana Premier League in Africa.
The deal, worth US$1.9 million, almost certainly a record deal for the country, was agreed after a US$8.2 million deal between the Botswana Football Association (BFA) and Munhumotapa African Broadcasting Corporation (MABC) fell through and left the league’s future uncertain. It is understood that at least US$300,000 will be used to finance the administration of the league after its near collapse this year. BTC chief executive Thapelo Lippe said: “We are committed to the development of football in Botswana and that is why we are investing in the Premier League. Be Mobile can grow through football and it is up to the clubs to convince their supporters to become Be Mobile subscribers.”
President of the BFA David Fani believes the partnership marks the beginning of a new chapter in Botswana football. “We appreciate that Be Mobile has seen football as a viable partner so early into their operation. The acquisition of this sponsorship was a joint effort between BFA, Premier League Committee and BTC," he said.
“There is no doubt that the parties will face some challenges but what is important is to work together. I challenge the clubs to be professional and I thank them for their understanding during the difficult times.”
