The Extreme Sailing Series has announced Barcelona as the host of its fourth event this year, part of a new four-year deal between series organisers OC Sport and host venue partner Fundación Navegación Oceánica de Barcelona (FNOB).
The addition of the new stop in Barcelona, which will stage its event from 20th to 23rd July, competes the Extreme Sailing Series’ eight-Act 2017 schedule.
The deal marks a return to Spain for the Extreme Sailing Series, whose unique brand of ‘stadium racing’ last visited the country in 2011, when it was hosted by Almeria.
"We are thrilled to return to Spain, and for the first time to Barcelona,” said Andy Tourell, the series’ event director.
“The iconic Olympic city ticks many of the boxes we look for in our host cities, including excellent racing conditions, commercial interest and the ability to race close to the shore.”
An Extreme Sailing Series statement said access to Barcelona’s public Race Village, located at the W Barcelona hotel on the Plaça Rosa dels Vents in the city’s Barceloneta neighbourhood, will be offered free of charge.
The next event on this year’s Extreme Sailing Series is set for Portugal’s Madeira Islands from 29th June to 2nd July.
