Another seven-figure boost for Indian boxing

The Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) has signed a three year sponsorship deal with the steel manufacturer Monnet Ispat and Energy.

The Indian Boxing Federation (IBF) has signed a three year sponsorship deal with the steel manufacturer Monnet Ispat and Energy.

The announcement, which was made at the launch of a series of exhibition boxing bouts between Indian and international boxers, sees Monnet Steel become the kit sponsors of the various men's, women's and junior boxing teams and the title sponsor of Indian boxing's governing body.

IBF president Abhay Singh Chautala said, "This was just the right boost that we needed to help make our boxers among the best in the world."

The new sponsorship comes off the back of the teams promising result at the recently-concluded Commonwealth Boxing Championships in Delhi, in which six Indian boxers won gold medals.

Sandeep Jajodia, managing director of Monnet Steel said, "We were keen to associate with sports since I have always felt sports attracts very little corporate funding in India. We chose boxing because it represents strength, much like steel, a product we make. We will stay with the team through the upcoming Commonwealth Games 2010 and right up to the London Olympics in 2012."

The 19th edition of the Commonwealth Games is due to take place in Delhi between 3rd October and 14th October 2010 where Indian boxers will be hoping to improve on their recent success.
