Amazon has reached an agreement with media and entertainment company Discovery Communications, which will see the digital giant stream content from Discovery’s Eurosport channel to subscribers of its Prime service in Austria and Germany.
The deal will offer Amazon Prime members access to a host of major sports properties, including German soccer’s Bundesliga, the Australian Open, French Open and US Open Grand Slam tennis tournaments, the MotoGP motorcycling series and the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games.
The partnership will be activated immediately, and coverage will be made available live and on demand from the Eurosport Player OTT service through the recently launched Amazon Channels streaming platform. Transmissions will be available via the Prime Video app on smart televisions, mobile devices and Amazon Fire tablets.
The deal follows carriage deals for Eurosport on the Amazon Channels platform in other markets, including the UK, and Amazon's collaboration with the National Football League (NFL) to stream ten Thursday night games in the US this season. That one-year agreement, which is valued at around US$50 million, represents the company’s biggest move so far into the sports streaming space.
Alex Green, managing director of Amazon Channels Europe, said: “We are delighted to offer our millions of Prime members in Germany and Austria access to live premium sports, including Bundesliga football on Eurosport Player via Amazon Channels.
“At €4.99 [US$6] per month, with no long-term commitment and cancellable anytime, Prime members can enjoy Bundesliga matches and other premium sports at exceptional value and in the most flexible and easy way across all of their favourite devices and screens. This is great news for sports fans.”
“Discovery is excited to partner with Amazon to bring our premium sport to new and existing fans,” added Susanne Aigner-Drews, senior vice president and general manager of Discovery Communications in Germany, Switzerland and Austria. “As the new home of Bundesliga, Eurosport Player will deliver a more engaging and more accessible experience than ever before. This partnership helps us to deliver the ambition to give fans the opportunity to watch the teams and players they love, live through Amazon Channels.”
