Online betting brand Bwin has been confirmed as the first-ever title sponsor of the 3.Liga, which is the third tier of club soccer in Germany.
The two-year deal will cover the 2017/18 and 2018/19 seasons, marking the first time that the league has had a main sponsor since its formation in 2008.
The agreement will also see the Austrian-based company have its logo adorn the sleeves of competing teams’ playing shirts, as well as throughout stadiums and across online and print club media.
Bwin will also arrange workshops with 3.Liga sides to tackle issues such as match fixing, betting fraud and compulsive gambling.
“We are delighted to have won a strong supporter for the clubs with Bwin,” said Peter Frymuth, vice president of the German Football Association (DFB). “This partnership is a major step for the 3.Liga and a strong signal. For the first time, the clubs can benefit from a joint marketing venture. After the entry of Deutsche Telekomthis underscores again what a positive development the 3.Liga has taken and what role it has now.”
Stephan Heilmann, Bwin’s regional manager in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, added: "We regard it as a great honour to be the first private sports betting provider to be a long-term partner of the 3.Liga. We want to provide the clubs with the necessary knowledge to preserve the integrity of the sport as a company that has been active in Germany for more than ten years with partnerships in professional and amateur football. We look forward to working with the third league, their clubs and great fans.”
MSV Duisburg were crowned champions of the 3.Liga in 2016/17. Fixtures for the new season have not yet been released.
