The World Surf League (WSL) has announced the appointment of Will Chignell as its new chief marketing officer.
The experienced marketing and communications executive joins the global surfing organisation having held senior-level positions at sailing’s America's Cup and England’s Rugby Football Union (RFU).
In his new role, Chignell will oversee the WSL's global marketing, brand, social media, PR and communications as part of an executive team led by chief executive Sophie Goldschmidt. He replaces Scott Hargrove, who left the post a year ago.
Chignell and Goldschmidt previously worked alongside each other at the RFU between 2011 and 2016, serving as head of communications and chief commercial and marketing officer respectively.
"We're very fortunate to have Will join the organisation," Goldschmidt said in a statement. "He's a proven and respected leader in the marketing and communications arena, with broad experience across the world, in many events, in a variety of sports.”
Chignell, who also ran his own marketing and communications consultancy and was formerly an international broadcaster for UK network Sky Sports, added: "I can't wait to join such a talented, passionate team, and a brand and sport that has such enormous potential.
“There are many landmark events on the horizon, and the WSL, the sport and the athletes have an amazing story to tell."
Chignell becomes the second senior executive hire at the WSL since Goldschmidt took charge last July, following the appointment of Joseph Carr, a former UFC executive, as the tour's chief strategy officer in August.
