Uğur Erdener re-elected as World Archery president

Uğur Erdener has been re-elected as president of World Archery (WA), the sport’s governing body, for a fourth consecutive term.

The Turk, who first became president of the governing body in 2005, ran unopposed during the WA congress in Mexico City, Mexico, which ran from 13th to 14th October, before the 2017 World Archery Championships began on Sunday.

Erdener is president of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey, elected in 2011, and has been head of the Turkish Archery Federation for 23 years, as well as standing as an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member since 2008.

Colombia’s Maria Emma Gaviria and Sanguan Kosavinta of Thailand were re-elected as vice presidents, with USA’s Greg Easton, Vladimir Esheev of Russia, and Egypt’s Aladin Gabr reappointed as members of the Executive Board.

“Thank you for your ongoing support,” said Erdener. “It is a pleasure and an honour to continue as president of World Archery, one of the most forward-thinking, proactive and unified families in the world of international sport.

“I look forward to working with our member federations to further grow the important Olympic sport of archery, make continued progress in areas of good governance, clean sport and universality, and make significant strides towards World Archery’s vision of a world in which everyone has the opportunity to make archery their activity of choice.”
