In a breakout year in which he claimed his maiden major title at the PGA Championship, Justin Thomas swept the PGA Tour’s top individual honours, taking home its 2017 player of the year award and the ludicrous US$10 million bonus that comes with winning the tour’s annual FedEx Cup. He also became just the fourth golfer to win five times in a single season, including a major, before his 25th birthday, joining illustrious company in the form of Jack Nicklaus, Tiger Woods and Jordan Spieth.
A University of Alabama alumnus, Thomas is a classically trained champion and a golfer through and through. There is nothing particularly remarkable about him, except that he wins with impressive regularity and is as bankable a brand ambassador as they come. Based in Jupiter, the Floridian town that has become the de facto epicentre of professional golf in America, he is amongst the best in the modern game in more ways than one.
Having turned pro in 2014, Thomas now has his sights set on bigger goals. Tilts at more majors and an Olympic medal beckon but before that there is a Ryder Cup in Europe to contend with. September’s transatlantic contest could be the platform from which this trustworthy talent catapults himself to the next level. ML
