Whether England have ever possessed a cricketer so simultaneously vital across all three formats is debatable. Of course, with the comparatively recent advent of Twenty20 cricket, the sample size is not as extensive as it might be. However, in Buttler, English cricket has a diamond.

A star of the Indian Premier League and Australia’s Big Bash, recalled to England’s Test side, the man of the series in England’s 5-0 one-day international (ODI) demolition of Australia: the softly spoken wicketkeeper is a player at the top of his profession.
