Jordan Spieth is no longer the exciting youngster brimming with talent; he’s now the mature champion in pursuit of the career grand slam. On and off the course, the 25-year-old Texan cuts a consummate, confident figure, one for whom the weight of expectation carries little burden. Unflappable, infallible and unfazed by the hype, Under Armour’s main man in golf is as dependable as athlete endorsers come.
With Spieth leading the way, golf is a global sport intent on growing its international appeal. From a visibility perspective, the PGA Tour’s new global media rights deal with Discovery should put Spieth and his peers in all the right places and on all the right platforms from next year onwards. And then, of course, there is a second shot at Olympic glory just over the horizon.
Spieth’s long-time agent Jay Danzi recently jumped ship from Lagardère Sports to WME, a move that means this three-time major winner will have the commercial clout and far-reaching connections of the entertainment giant, its sister company IMG and the broader Endeavor network to call upon in future. Who knows where that association might lead. As Patrick Whitesell, the executive chairman of Endeavor, said upon signing both men in April: “The possibilities are endless.” ML
